about

Linking up with TT all the way from South Western Sydney, meet the multifaceted Zambian / Malawian artist and vocalist, Sevy. ‘Merry Go Creek’. A personal reference to the planned outer towns of Sydney, yet still capturing a familiar sense of dichotomy - suburban slog meets irreplicable natural beauty.

Growing up surrounded by Zambian, Malawian, Congolese & South African music, Sevy’s sound adopts the Alté approach to blending. Amalgamating all of these inspirations with uk references and adding an online spin to it all.

The opener ‘Dime’ is a sugarcoated prayer that Sevy has built8. By plugging the lyrical chant with a bouncy dancehall infused beat the mantra is naturally transferrable to the listener; “bad b cant turn to a chimera, trust yourself keep forging your path it gets hard when walking unwalked/not frequently walked paths.”

‘Wanna War We I Know Why’ lays out a beat connecting the rnb & soul energy of Naarm with pluggbn influences that crossover into similar pools of sound. The lyrics deconstruct thoughts that came together when sevy was connecting with a network of other african creatives in “so called australia” - contradictory sentiments of living whilst feeling the powerful presence of surveillance surface. “Expressions of your ubuntu being judged through the eyes that only read property, metrics and profit.”

where to now? A rage-ish type beat for ‘Domino 2’ acts as a hard-hitting vessel for emotions that hit once an all-consuming creative project comes to an end. Leaving you questioning will you ever get up to that place again?

Taking a moment on a pensive beat whilst being lifted by disjointed counter melodies on semi-airbourne plucked strings serves as the ideal moment to question the scarcity of time. ‘Don’t Rush’ was born out of a weekend of downtime with friends and reflecting on how precious but undervalued our hours are, always at risk of being traded up to work on the things around you but never quite succeeding.

Step into the retro-future for ‘OPG (Woah Reprise)’. The beat drips in aquatic and digicore infusions alluding to jai paul and tomb raider eras. Originally called OPG from the yoruba phrase “o por gan”. The eerie yet comforting harmonies are the foundations for sevy to “talk some shit”.

Fueled by a desire to dance, sevy closes out the EP with ‘Waistline’ a concoction of sounds from kwaito and amapiano blended together with Zed rnb/dancehall. The track ties together the release’s themes. “that’s the merry go way” drops you back into the suburban street where it all started, alluding to cyclical ebb and flow of life just like a merry go round.
