Tobago Tracks last release of the year comes from Lambeth- based producer Intentionally Cold, who serves up four hulking tracks that explore the frigid zones between grime and faster tempos. Cross-hatched by sampled voices and melodies thick with menace, this music wheezes balefully as it trudges across vast expanses of icy sound.
First track, ‘Rat Race’ begins slowly, drawing together ominous, droning strings, coughs and cavernous bass, before gradually accumulating speed to reveal a low-slung roller adorned by spidery clicks and snatches of manipulated voice.
‘Rosendale’ announces itself with fanfare before unloading a syrupy-thick footwork beat that enjoins snatches of weightless percussion to flow through its veins.
‘Replacement’ is all plosive kicks and technoid whirs, its serpentine melody writhing through the piston-like column of the beats.
Final track ‘Revenge’ closes the record’s icy loop, bringing back the ominous strings, but this time lanced over upright snares and echoing claps. It’s a style that shivers, leveraging some of grime’s propulsion to explore a spectral dimension of loss and death.
These four tracks feel like transmissions from some other place, in which winter lasts all year round.
Rat Race is available across all platforms the 15th of December.

This music is insistent and relentless. The fact that it has a ritualistic feel, with almost all sounds pushed to the edge of explosion isn't an accident. Well worth repeated listening. veenstar
